Current trends in forest livelihoods research

Billions of people around the world live in or near forests and many more reside in rural areas and communities interdispersed with trees. Much of this population relies on forests and trees for their livelihoods and wellbeing. However, these contributions are often overlooked in national and international policy discussions, which tend to focus on climate and biodiversity goals. Research is critical in advancing knowledge and raising the visibility of the relationship between forests, trees, and livelihoods. Research can also inform advocacy, policy, and other actions to conserve forests and their biodiversity, secure forest livelihoods, and tackle climate change. Yet existing research has often been ineffective in fostering sustained and meaningful change on the ground and many urgent questions remained unresolved. How can research—and researchers—make a difference? And what are the most important current trends in forest livelihoods that deserve wider attention or greater scrutiny? This Special Issue explores these questions by showcasing the latest research on the intersection of forests and livelihoods. Contributions are especially welcome that address the following themes: barriers to effective creation and use of research in policy and practice; collective action for systemic change favoring flourishing human communities and forest landscapes; joining climate and biodiversity goals in the context of forest livelihoods; demographic change and next generation leadership; forest, poverty and wellbeing dynamics; bioeconomy, finance and innovation for sustainable energy transitions; reforestation challenges and opportunities; and/or advances in data and methods for analyzing forests and human wellbeing.
